Robinvale College NAIDOC WEEK Celebrations 2016

Songlines: The living narrative of our nation

 

For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, the Dreamtime describes a time when the earth, people and animals were created by our ancestral spiritual beings.  They created the rivers, lakes, plants, land formations and living creatures.

This week we commenced with our annual NAIDOC Assembly where we had a number of special items ranging from Didgeridoo playing, a Welcome dance performed by students and hearing from our guest speaker Brendan Kennedy who spoke about Song lines and the connections to land in Aboriginal Culture.

The 3/4 students visited the Mia Mia with their language teacher Brendan Kennedy. Brendan showed the students around the Mia Mia as well as taking them on a walk along the creek to the river, explaining the importance of these sites to the local Aboriginal People.

All the students enjoyed their time at the Mia Mia.

Tuesday Willie Hannah from DSE conducted a number of cultural sessions to classes in the 5 - 8 Learning Community and extending to our year 7/8 guests from St Marys. The Clontarf boys cooked a sausage sizzle along with Kangaroo tasters for students and staff to sample.

 

During the week Sharon Urquhart joined a number of art classes and shared her knowledge about aboriginal symbols and how stories were passed down. Students then took part in creating their own art work. Calinda and Janelle Made damper with the year 7/8 students.

 

Clontarf held a football game after school Wednesday for the boys and their families. Thursday we had a guest performer Sean

Choolburra a comedian who blends popular culture, dance, comedy and hip hop in a high energy show. Students and staff were thoroughly entertained by Sean. From the reviews we have received of Sean’s performance he would be made very welcome should

he decide to return to Robinvale College.
